People across the world express strong support for democracy, yet they are often less enthusiastic when asked about authoritarian alternatives. How should we understand these attitudes, and do they matter? Drawing on research for a new book, *Tired of Freedom?*, this lecture examines what public support for democracy means, how it varies across countries, and how it has changed over time. I then ask whether public support helps protect democracy from backsliding and erosion, and whether citizens who are committed to democracy actually choose pro-democratic candidates and parties at the ballot box. Combining a comprehensive global dataset of public opinion with new voting experiments, the lecture explores the role of ordinary citizens in sustaining democratic government.
